Finnish Classic Bike: JoPo

31 Mar

Last Summer in Finland I had a flash back from the 80’s. The very basic JoPo from the 80’s seemed to be either parked at every corner or someone was just riding a JoPo past me.

I remember JoPo bikes from the 80’s. My mum had a blue JoPo and I got lifts on JoPo too.  JoPos were very basic back in those days and nothing special – at least in my opinion. With no gears and 24″ wheels there was nothing exciting about them. At some point, unfortunately, our blue JoPo was stolen and I forgot about them. Until last Summer when I saw upgraded funky JoPos everywhere and started to want and most importantly need one too. There are JoPos for children too!

JoPos manufacturer, Finnish company Helkama relaunched “EveryMan’s” bikes aka “Jokamiehen Pyora” in 2000 again and they have been hugely popular. With easily adjustable seat and handlebar every man and woman can ride a JoPo. Available in many funky colours the JoPos have certain retro look and appeal and trendy young Finns love to be seen with their JoPos out and about.

JoPos have been even given as wedding presents, and when an old friend of mine moved to Geneva few years ago, his wife started her own mumpreneur shop, Urban Bike Store, importing and selling JoPos to the Swiss!

Unfortunately there are no JoPo shops in the UK at the moment but Finnish Design Shop sells them for €419. And obviously there is Riikka’s online shop in Geneva too!

Cloth Nappies

7 Feb

One more post whilst I’m waiting my nappy washing to get done…

In Finland cloth nappies are very popular! There are lots of mumpreneurs designing and sewing nappies and many mums also prefer to make their babies’ nappies themselves as it is easy (if you’re into sewing) and get exactly what you want. Finnish cloth nappies tend to be colourful and have cool prints!  Unfortunately I’ve been a naughty Finn and haven’t tried Finnish nappies so far, although they get brilliant reviews and look very funky with cool prints, like these Helmi nappies (available as AIO or pocket, with poppers or aplix)!

In the UK Babybots stocks Hahtuvahullu’s Helmi nappies!

When I was pregnant I was planning to use cloth nappies for MiniMoose. However when he was born that was the last thing on my mind. But when things started to settle after 4 months I got interested in cloth nappies again – especially after reading an article about the harmful chemicals used in disposables. Also obviously disposables aren’t exactly environmental. So I decided to give them a go.

We’ve tried many different brands and for a year now we’ve been happy users of Smartipants, Flips and Bumgenius. The great thing about cloth nappies is that you can easily sell them on if the nappy doesn’t fit. We also use Cheeky Wipes and just throw them in the nappy bucket with the nappies. I only rinse poo off the nappies and lazy as I am otherwise the nappies just go into the bucket to wait their wash. Overall I don’t find washing nappies time consuming at all since I wash laundry almost every day anyway.

We had some problems with nappy rash last Spring. This was due to too little washing powder used to wash them. I had read so many articles how you shouldn’t use too much washing powder without realising that we have hard water. Luckily someone recommended Rockin Green Bare Naked Babies (hard rock) washing powder and everything has been perfect since then. Rockin Green has suitable washing powders for all types of water including very tough hard water with different scents!

We also took the nappies with us to Finland last Summer and used Ecover Delicate to wash them and that worked very well too. I haven’t used Ecover here in the UK because I’m unsure about the dose, so I keep using Rockin Green. Just recently I ordered RG Rage Against Raspberries, although I was worried about scented washing powder. But the scent is very light and I can hardly even smell it after the wash!

Little Brook Bakery

7 Feb

A friend of mine, a mum to a lovely little girl, also set up her business recently. Being a trained chocolatier – if I remember correctly – it’s not a surprise that she bakes some amazing things!

She recently baked and decorated this cool birthday party cake –  a dream of any birthday boy!

Valentine’s Day just around the corner, The Little Brook Bakery makes lovely cupcakes that can spell any message the customer wants!

The Little Brook Bakery also provided yummy gingerbread biscuits for Hei Moose to take on to the Living North Fair before Christmas and the biscuits were a mega success among the stall visitors – and perfect to calm down the little tired fair visitors!

There are lots of more pictures of her amazing creations on Little Brook Bakery’s Facebook page!

Little Stomper

4 Feb

To continue with shoe shopping for cool kids, another mumpreneur Claire has launched a funky online shoe shop Little Stomper that sells colourful, cool shoes including another fab Scandi Brand Molo!

If MiniMoose didn’t already have wellies, I’d definitely go for these rainbow wellies by Molo for £20.99 – bargain!

The reason MiniMoose has wellies for the moment is that we came to Grandma Moose’s once without any shoes for the baby! We had to quickly shoe shop anywhere we could and for now MiniMoose is stuck (not literally) with his quite dreadful Mickey Mouse wellies…

Another cool pair of shoes at Little Stomper is Molo’s winter boots for only £16.99

With the weather as it is I can imagine these flying off the shelves!

One thing that my shop doesn’t have is the lovely Swedish Moccis slippers! I absolutely adore them purely because they are so cute, but luckily they are also very practical.

A combination between a sock and a shoe, these are ideal for toddlers to run around indoors (do they ever walk anywhere?)  as with the leather soles – well they may go faster – but they don’t slip that easily! I also prefer these to the rubber sole moccasins since these are softer and more flexible for the little foot.

The Moccis usually retail at around £19.90 but the best deal in my opinion is at the funky burp! boutique for £18!
