Cloth Nappies

7 Feb

One more post whilst I’m waiting my nappy washing to get done…

In Finland cloth nappies are very popular! There are lots of mumpreneurs designing and sewing nappies and many mums also prefer to make their babies’ nappies themselves as it is easy (if you’re into sewing) and get exactly what you want. Finnish cloth nappies tend to be colourful and have cool prints!  Unfortunately I’ve been a naughty Finn and haven’t tried Finnish nappies so far, although they get brilliant reviews and look very funky with cool prints, like these Helmi nappies (available as AIO or pocket, with poppers or aplix)!

In the UK Babybots stocks Hahtuvahullu’s Helmi nappies!

When I was pregnant I was planning to use cloth nappies for MiniMoose. However when he was born that was the last thing on my mind. But when things started to settle after 4 months I got interested in cloth nappies again – especially after reading an article about the harmful chemicals used in disposables. Also obviously disposables aren’t exactly environmental. So I decided to give them a go.

We’ve tried many different brands and for a year now we’ve been happy users of Smartipants, Flips and Bumgenius. The great thing about cloth nappies is that you can easily sell them on if the nappy doesn’t fit. We also use Cheeky Wipes and just throw them in the nappy bucket with the nappies. I only rinse poo off the nappies and lazy as I am otherwise the nappies just go into the bucket to wait their wash. Overall I don’t find washing nappies time consuming at all since I wash laundry almost every day anyway.

We had some problems with nappy rash last Spring. This was due to too little washing powder used to wash them. I had read so many articles how you shouldn’t use too much washing powder without realising that we have hard water. Luckily someone recommended Rockin Green Bare Naked Babies (hard rock) washing powder and everything has been perfect since then. Rockin Green has suitable washing powders for all types of water including very tough hard water with different scents!

We also took the nappies with us to Finland last Summer and used Ecover Delicate to wash them and that worked very well too. I haven’t used Ecover here in the UK because I’m unsure about the dose, so I keep using Rockin Green. Just recently I ordered RG Rage Against Raspberries, although I was worried about scented washing powder. But the scent is very light and I can hardly even smell it after the wash!
